The Brazilian Tanager shows a sexual dimorphism: the male’s plumage is bright red while the female is mostly grey-brown. The bird mostly forages in the canopy of tall trees. They often build their nest using the roots of epiphytic fungi. Only the female is incubating.

Although they are good songsters and found in pet trade, their status is still stable.
