The Sapodilla is an evergreen tree with green, glossy foliage similar to laurel. It grows up to 30 meters tall. Its crown makes up the upper canopy in the humid forest. The strong branches are widely forked.

The fruit are tasty. The durable wood is used just as the white gum, which contains chicle. Chicle was already used by the Maya as a chewing gum.
