Jelly palms are native to the south of Brazil. It is one of the few palms that have both male and female flowers on the same plant. The Jelly Palm is the only one of the genus with an economic value.

One single plant can produce up to 100 kg of plum-like fruit. Its pulp is used for jelly and juice. It has a high content of vitamin A. The nuts are oily and can be eaten or used for livestock feeding. Similar to coconut oil it can be pressed to obtain cooking oil.
