Male and female of Yellow Cardinal differ in plumage,with the male having a black forehead, cap and crest, females are grayer.

The bird is very popular in the pet trade and thus its population is endangered. It is also threatened by land transformation and logging. Lastly it may hybridize with the Common Diuca Finch.
