The Seagrape is a small tree growing in coastal regions and tolerant of salt water spray. Its branches are low-set and its foliage is round and leathery. Flowers are dioecious, that means there are only purely male and purely female flowers. From the female flowers originate drooping infructescence.

The fruit are sweet and sour and can be eaten raw. They are mainly processed to jelly and wine-like drinks.
