Howler monkeys stay high up in the trees of the rainforest. Their diet mostly consists of leaves. Their strong, prehensile tail enables them to grasp and hang in branches.

Old males have a very big larynx to produce extremely loud calls, mostly early in the morning and before sunset. But also younger males and females can join in calling.

Howler monkeys are threatened by increasing loss of habitat and hunting. Many forests are converted in sugar cane plantations to produce so called “bio ethanol”.
